The Clendinning Family Name
The Clendinning family name appears to have originated as a derivation of a place called Glendonwyne, in the 13th century, a parish of Westerkirk, Dumfriesshire, Scottland, located a little more than 50 miles south of Edinburgh. From Glendonwyn, or one who came from the glen of the fair hill, the name mutated into many spelling versions, Glendoning to Glendinning, the most likely precursor to Clendinning. Within Dumfriesshire lies a place called Glendinning Heights, possibly the ancestral home of the Glendinnings, and thus the Clendinnings. Glendenning and Clendenon were accepted as septs of Douglas by CDSNA at its organization in 1975 based on the original list from the book Scots Kith and Kin.
Variants include, but may not be limited to Glenndenning, Glendennon, Glendoning, Glendining, Clendenning, Clendenen, Clendennen, Clindening, Glendonwyn and Clendenon. More information on the relationship of the Glendinning name to the Douglas Clan may be found at the Clan Douglas website.
